229th Anniversary of the Crossing of the Dan
The George Washington Chapter's wreath in honor of the day Major General Nathanael Greene brought his weak, badly equipped and outnumbered colonial troops safely out of North Carolina across the Dan River into Virginia just hours ahead of British light cavalry under the command of Major General Charles, the Earl Cornwallis. Greene's strategic retreat set the stage for the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina, on March 15, 1781, in which Lord Cornwallis paid a terrific price -- losing nearly a quarter of his army -- to force General Greene's troops to withdraw from the fireld. Greene left his artillery behind, but saved most of his army to fight another day.
